bis 10 cm lang, Färbung kann stark variieren von hellbraun bis dunkelrotbraun, oft mit dunklen Flecken, Verwechslung mit Springfrosch möglich, jedoch Kehl- und Bauchseite immer gefleckt, reduzierte Schwimmhäute, innere Schallblase
Lebensraum, Lebensweise:
Bäche, Moor- und Sumpfwiesen, Gärten und Wälder, tag- und nachtaktiv, gut ans Landleben angepasst, entfernt sich am meisten vom Wasser, überwintert im Schlamm
Fortpflanzung:
Laichzeit Anfang Februar / März (erster Frosch am Wasser), macht größere Laichwanderungen, an fast allen stehenden oder langsam fließenden Gewässern, ca. 3.500 Eier in Laichballen, die an der Oberfläche schwimmen
